Reeds are getting to be a problem for me. I was wondering if any of you make your own reeds, buy hand made reeds or commercial reeds etc....whatever your thoughts are on this topic. Also any advice on learning to make reeds?
The best advice I could give on learning to make your own reeds is to learn from your bassoon teacher, one who, naturally, makes his or her own reeds. Books and videos are great but actually seeing someone do it is priceless. On the other hand, if you don't think this is going to be a lifelong career for you, reed-making equipment is fairly expensive and you might feel you would be better off just investing that same money in decent quality reeds. There is a lot of angst associated with making your own reeds, and a big failure percentage, so you have to be ready for that.
