I was considering taking up bassoon in college, and was wondering if a fox three or four would be acceptable. I plan on going to a humid climate, so would prefer poly anyways. I noticed In the wwbw magazine, they listed it as a professional instrument (both the three and four) and was wondering whether that was just an exaggeration or not.

The Fox 3 & 4 polypropylene bassoons are made & finished to their normal pro standards - it's just that they're not made of wood. Their web site should give full details - www.foxproducts.com

There is prejudice against plastic instruments because most are cheap beginner instruments but they can be made to the same quality as wooden ones (Some top oboe makers produce plastic top joints for their instruments)although the sound might be slightly different to wood.

thanks for the input! I would buy a three for the nominal increase from the four becuase of the metal, it looks WAY nicer! Again, this is a relief, considering humidity is not usually good for wooden instruments. Some plastic instruments really can sound okay I guess, I would not however buy a 41 or 51, even if it was Fox, and for college would OBVIOUSLY steer clear from the Lintons! Lol, a site professed the linton 5 and 6k were professional! THAT is what I would consider an exaggeration

Agreed - some descriptions are definitely optimistic. I know a couple of people who play on the poly. Foxes (rather than the Renard student jobs) & they sound fine. But then some players would on any heap of rubbish!

I currently play on the Fox IV and love the sound. It's not a bad choice for using it in Univeristy since I am currently at the moment. But that's only until I save up enough money for the Fox Model I I have my eye on.
