I was wondering which instrument to stick with, my saxophone or my bassoon. I plan on going to college to become a band director, but i cant choose which. I've been plaing sax for a year longer and am very sufficent and the same on bassoon. Also, a quick thing to add is if anyone is a winds teacher, i would like some private lessons, in Grand Rapids area of MI. THanks

I went through the same thing. I chose Bassoon, because I enjoy classical music, and am more proficient in it than Jazz (lets be honest, classical saxophone just doesn't exists xD). I plan on going into performance, so that changes my perspective though. You'll know when the time comes which to choose (or to stay with both?)

If you are gong to go on to college to be a band director you are going to end up learning all the instruments to some degree. I don't see any reason for you to pick between the two instruments. Play them both. The bassoon is played by fewer people and will help you qualify for a scholarship, perhaps easier than saxophone(in getting a scholarship not easier to play). So don't give up playing the bassoon whatever you do.

My band teacher went to college as a flute and tuba double major. Have you considered doing a similar thing with your saxophone and bassoon? If you're going to have to teach both, why not? I'm sure your bassoon students especially would appreciate. (I play bassoon and learned from a retired bassoonist band teacher. When I started lessons with my current bassoon instructor, the first thing she notcied was that I knew the fingerings and asked right away who taught me cuz she said they did a good job.)

I found at most colleges the competition to make it into a saxophone studio is much harder than to get into a bassoon studio. Let's face it. A bassoon principal for a college is highly sought. If you're a killer sax player then audition on that. But in my opinion an above average Bassoon player is more attractive then an above average Sax player. What schools are you looking at?
