In the beginning of a song we're playing, Three Revelations of Lotus Sutra, deel 1, the bassoons have to play the real high F(octave about the staff) as the first note as a solo.

I'm the only bassoon and every time i try to get it, i either don't even make a sond or it sounds something like a dieing walrus!
I've tried everything i can think of and my reed is a good on, med. hard. Any advice? should i use a hard reed instead?

I am not familiar with this piece, but what most bassoonists would consider "the real high F" is the one on the top line of the treble clef. I feel pretty sure you don't mean that one.

So, to finger the F an octave below that (two lines above the bass clef staff) I would suggest going on google and getting several fingering chart suggestions from different sites and trying all the fingerings for F that you see on the different charts. You can put in "bassoon fingering chart" and get a number of different charts. Try them all and decide which one is easiest to blow and which sounds best on your horn. To play the note, try working up to it in practice from C, then D, then E, then finally F. Slide up to it at first until you can get it, then try tonguing the notes.

I would not suggest getting a harder reed - a medium reed should be all you need for most things. You just need good embouchure and breath support to get this note.

I go with Drew on this one - good breath support, without squeezing the reed too much, is needed on these higher notes.

do you use the whisper key? On the high E and above it can make the note speak much better. It may be your problem, as some bassoons need the whisper key to be held down on the high E and above.

you're going to make your emboursure (i know, is spelled that wrong) a lot tighter than on the lower notes. also try pressing down the top key done by the left hand pinkie finger. (also known as the 18 key, i think) this key sometimes helps with intonation at least.
