Hi everyone,
Recently, I have been looking to switch bassoons. I couldn't find my old Screiber anywhere, so I've been looking into Foxes. I wouldn't know the difference between the two because I've never played anything other than a Screiber. Could somebody help?

I couldn't tell you. All I've played on are a plastic selmer in 7th grade and the schreiber I've been playing ever since...let me know if you find the answer to your question, i'd like to know too

The switch wouldn't be tough, and foxes are great instruments. What is your price range so I could help you better?

I don't know about the difference but Fox is a pretty solid manufacturer and you should be fine with them.

I have up to $9900 to spend on a new bassoon. The artist models from Fox fall well within, and most screibers are also around this price. The fox pro models are too expensive though.

I'd say go for a Fox. Schreiber must have changed owners/manufacturers because the newer Schreibers aren't nearly as good as old ones from the early 90's and earlier.

I agree about Schreiber. With all the changes of ownwership involving Schreiber over the last few years I hear that they are in a bit of a dodgy state.
Also have a look at Moosmann, Adler & Monnig & see what takes your fancy. All are well made & sound good but different.
The customer service offered by Fox is second to none.

ahhh...that would explain why everyone says schriebers are bad. I play on a 60 yr old shreiber, and its FAB! I was always confused about why everyone I ntalk to syas Schrieber suck, and fox is better, although I dont like fox. The low register is harder to get out, and it doesnt play as easy as my schrieber. However, the new foxes are probably better than the new schriebers...

Thanks guys for the great responses. I used to play on a 20-something year old Schreiber, and it was pretty good. My school's 10-year old Schreiber isn't half bad either, but the keywork on it is short reach, which doesn't work for my big hands. I may just order a Renard 240, though, judging from the comments about Schreiber's iffy quality.

By the way,you may want to look into used bassoons, because then you could afford a better instrument than you are looking at with your price range now. Also, as you have heard in this forum, older bassoons are usually better quality? (not a proven fact) I have also heard that older bassoons are better because the wood ages longer or something, but that may be a complete myth...
