So what pieces, in your opinion have the best bassoon parts whether its a solo or just some awesome bass line>

I'll start the list by saying West Side Story in general has awesome bassoon parts.

How could this list exist without saying Rite of Spring?

In our youth orchestra, we did an arrangement of Debussy's Children's Corner - the last movement was basically a huge fun Bassoon solo. That was a good time.

Pines of Rome! The 1st bassoon part is insane, the 2nd not so much but still hard and awesome to play. It also uses a contrabassoon which makes it that much more awesome.

I've just been listening again to Stravinsky's neoclassical ballet, 'Pulcinella'. It has lovely bassoon parts. Not that I'd ever be able to play it...

We played Espana Rhapsody at All-State Orchestra, and that had a great bassoon part.

Well, the 2nd movement bassoon solo in "Scheherazade" (Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov) is nice. . . It's not difficult, but you're like the only one playing for at least ten measures while the low strings change a couple of chords in the background- very solo-istic. . .
Maurice Ravel's "Bolero" also has an epic solo. . .

My conductor hadn't had a bassoon in years at the school until I came along my frehman year, and he went all out. Every piece either had a bassoon solo or a very exposed bassoon part. I guess he looked in his music library and went "gee, lets play all of this stuff here".
Anyway, it was fun, and I really liked playing "Vesuvius" by Frank Ticheli (cool bassoon part, bassoon solo, and it's all in weird time signatures"
"Variations on America" was pretty awesome too. It was basically a solo the entire time. (:

Personally I love the Bassoon 'Grand' Concerto if F by Johann Nepemuk Hummel. The first movement is a grand dance for the bassoon.

Anything that doesn't have a bassoon in it is just fine for me.

I love playing the bassoon part of Pirates of the Caribbean. It's an awesome piece to be listening to as well!
