So I just started playing Bassoon about a month ago, my high school is new and so are the players, but we got a 2 in FBA or the competition thing.
my director is really patient with me, because yeah it's pretty difficult to learn this instrument, but he's already picking on me and giving me the stink eye when I play Kentucky 1800. It's nothing like i've played before (clarinet and alto sax) i'm having difficulty with just about everything.
Any help for a player new to the Bass clef and all??

Wow! Trying to play in a band on a new instrument with different type of reed & fingering plus learning bass clef afetr only a month is expecting a lot, even if you are experienced on other woodwinds. (When I bought a contra bassoon I didn't play in any groups for 3 months, even with 20 years experience on bassoon, just to get use to the different feel & some fingerings).

First off talk to your band director about it. Do you have a separate teacher for bassoon? If so get him/her to speak to the BD.

The only way to progress is lots of private practice to get used to the fingering & bass clef preferably with the help of a specialist bassoon teacher.

Good luck.

If you feel really gutsy, offer him the bassoon and ask if he wants to play it. Don't let him discourage you. You are just starting, and everything the intelligent man above me said is quite true.
