sadly i am the only bassoonist in my school. i started bassoon some time in 8th grade, but i am pretty good at it in 9th grade this year. personally its really easy for me. probably because i played oboe for almost 4 yrs before that. and i took up sax last year for marching, but i really am the only in my band. its cool, cuz i get all the solos... but i guess that the entire song for me is a solo... but anyways its an awesome instrument. my teacher was excited when i decided to pick it up..ttyl.

I think both males and females can make good bassoonists! There are quite a number of fantastic female bassoonists that I can name like Kim Walker(my personal favourite), Judith Leclair and Andrea Merenzon. Male bassoonists include Milan Turkovic, Devid DeBolt and Christopher Millard. Have you guys heard of the Caliban Quartet? Simply marvellous!!

I think because by the time female bassoonists reach college and post college...they tend to get a life(and a family)!!! LOL!!!!!
I must say the competition is FIERCE out there. I know local bassoonists that are fabulous, but only fabulous enough to play semi pro in anything they can.
Gee, what a life, spending your life driving from rehearsal to rehearsal in multiple cities....

In our band we have 3 girls who play the bassoon. A guy played, but only for about 2 months, then he quit and went back to sax. Starting tuesday, I will make it four bassoon players in our band, because I will be switching from clarinet to bassoon.

If you are going to be a scream trumpet player or something where you need a great deal of strength and lung capacity, guys are naturally built better for that stuff. Otherwise, it doesn`t matter.

comment. I think that all depends.. the guy I know.. can barely hold 3 bars.. and hes an avg. sized guy.. Im an avg. sized girl and I can hold a note for about 10 bars. It all depends.. and as far as professional bassoonists... Ive heard of some.. never seen any.. my music teacher thinks I could go pro though.. so I dont know.

in my school, there is only one bassoon! Me!! thats how it was in middle school too. So ive never had too much competition. until uil and what-not. i always get beat by this one girl though. it doesnt matter about male or female. its determination, and how involved in your social life you are!! sometimes we girls are just more stubborn about not wanting to be shown up by a GUY!!!

sorry, I really don`t see any reason for topics like male vs. female to get started - it shouldn`t matter which sex is most popular on a particular instrument for someone to decide whether or not they want to play it - I say just go with what you want to play and ignore negative comments and take the compliments - a person isn`t going to be better just b/c they are a girl or guy, maybe they`ll look better in some people`s eyes, but that doesn`t really make a difference
