What kind? I play sax (bari and Alto) in seventh grade. Now I`m going into eighth. I want to play bassoon in highschool, so I figured get one now, learn it in eighth grade and be ready for highschool. For A kid on a budget of $2,000 - $4,000. What bassoon should I get, Long bore, short bore, wood, polypropalyne?

Get either a Fox or a Renard (same company, different names) They have some models that are relatively inexpensive and of good quality. For a younger student, I would reccomend a plastic body as opposed to the wood body because the sound similar and the wood is less durable than plastic, which is a problem in school and such. Good luck.

For about $4000 you can get a new Fox 222D bassoon with upgraded bocals.

Do a google search -- used bassoon -- and you should be able to find some shops that might have one in stock. Additionally, some of the better repair shops sell used student instruments that are in your price range. From what I can tell there are like 10 to 20 folks across the contry that specialize in bassoons.

In searching for a used bassoon for my son I did a lot of research and talked tos some professional bassoon players.

BE CAREFUL buying an instrument off of someplace like ebay. I was told that there are a lot of new bassoons out there that are junk.
