Maynard IS playing Monette now.
And now that Steinway has purchased Holton and they are now longer going to make the MF Horns, it makes sense.
Maynard does not get paid by Monette.
His lead guy, Patrick Hessian is also playing Monette horns.
Check out his next gig in your area, it not clips and pics. I really don not think The Boss is hurting for money.

And Luke, I think Dave (original author) bought a Getzen Capri in Sept/Oct 2003. Dave also was using Sam Ash Premium Valve Oil, and seems to be doing OK. I do think the forum has progressed to more advice and opinions on horns you have, or have played ..both good and bad!

The Steinway Co. has purchased just about all of the music manufacterers. They now own UMI, Selmer, Bach, Conn, Holton etc.
They will NO LONGER make Martin Committee Trumpets,
They will NO LONGER make any Holton MF Horns,
There is currently NO American importer for LeBlanc or Courtois.
For the best in American made horns you will need to look at Calicchio, Schilke and Yamaha. Yamaha being made in the USA.

Monette`s are made in Oregon state. David Monette used to live in Chicago, which is also where his shop was. So, Monette`s are made in the U.S., as well.

Of course, these horns are out of the question for the average citizen, (although I still plan on owning one or two of them, at some point in the near future), so I`ll agree with Chuck on the best choices for great horns. I`m currently playing a Benge 3x. It`s a beautiful trumpet with Silver laquer. I shined it up the other day. Amazing. There were spots on the surface I thought would never come out. All of them are gone.

I actually do not own the Benge. I own a Conn. It`s not a pretty horn, but I think it`s a little brighter sounding than the Benge, and it`s easier to blow on, as well. Probably because the metal is more light weight.

It`s funny that everyone now wants to bash the USA.
If you can find a better horn somewhere else, buy it!
The original question was what horn for his money.
Personally, Monette, Calicchio, Schilke, Lawler are better than anything you might find out of the US.
That includes Taylor, which are very good,(England) BS Challenger,(Germany)Inderbinen,(Swiss)Courtois (France) and Stomvi,(Spain) Wayne Tenabe is now making trumpets under the Chicago Brassworks name. His horns are also very good.
If you think that your Swiss horn is the best, buy it, play it and enjoy it.
As for me......nah!

The Martin `Committee` was popular for jazz in the 60`s -- Gillespie and Davis, e.g., and you can still find them on e-bay for ~$395 U.S. The larger bores have fuller sound and rival the Schilke`s - look for the numeral `3` for 0.468 size (largest) above the serial number imprinted on the outside of the 2nd valve.
Schilke was on the committee that designed the Committee before he started making his own line.
I have a 1962 Martin Magna C supposedly designed for orchestra that I had restored from my high school days (32 years ago) and it does well for Haydn as well as Ellington - it`s just rare. There is a Getzen (Doc Severinson model) better than the Bach Strad but it retails for $2500.
It is really important to listen to the above advice on trying out individual instruments and matching them to your own chops - I just lucked out finding my Martin in Florissant, Missouri in the late 60`s.
There was some talk of a trumpet designer (?Monette) trying to match the individual`s lung capacity and other physiologic parameters to the instrument - but for some extraordinary amount of money. I believe there is such individual capacity to adjust that even a mediocre instrument could be made to sound reasonable in the right hands.

I Have a nickel plated olds special which as a bright sound and it is quite old but if you could find one.It Is a great horn for the money. And it is a great jazz horn.

whats wrong with the bach tr300 thats what im about 2 buy but ya look on ebay they have brand new ones on there i check there each day i believe bach is the best but yamaha besson and schlike r good but dont buy anything made in india or europe they suck!! DONT BUY A TRUMPET BY THE NAME OF BORG!! I HAVE 1 NOT EVEN 4 1 YEAR AND ITS RUSTING!!
