Hi, this is my first day on this forum, and I am excited to get involved. I have played the violin for over seven years, and I am also giving violin lessons to my brother and sister.

I was just wondering, why is music important to you? How has it influenced you and what experiences have you gained from it?

I like music because I believe it cleanses the soul. If I'm mad or dissapointed, happy, etc. I reach for the piano or trombone. I also like to sing.

music is my sanctuary- it's my release of emotions and i love 'feeling' the music. i put everything i have into it so i can put the emotions the composer was feeling when they wrote the piece. then when i've finished playing i feel like i've accomplished something great. Music is something that i can control and change to fit whatever i'm feeling. I don't know what i would do without music in my life, that's why I want to become a music therapist, so i can show other people how to be happy by incorperating music into their lives.

I have to agree with ALL that has been said, but I LOVE it when you are playing in an ensemble, and it gets really loud, and it's a really awesome chord, and you get goosebumps, and a weird feeling inside, it's hard to explain, but if you've played good music, then I'm SURE you all know what I mean!!

PLUS, music is the only langauge that mean and sarcastic things can be said in!!

PLUS, EVERYONE likes some form of music.....RIGHT????

that's true. everyone likes music! music can also connect you to people from other cultures. while traveling I use to go to music festivals - being there, enjoying the music together makes me realize that we don't necessarily need language to communicate, music is kind of a universal means of connectedness. I guess that's the reason why we actually do music - I mean humankind in general...

I am a vocalist. I love listening to music. Music allows the soul to have a voice. Express anything which words can't.

I fell in love with music when I was 12. I was going through alot with my family, and my dad encouraged the importance of music to me before he died. Music gave me an escape route to my woes as a troubled young lady. It kept me sane, and I guess I can even say it was my anti-drug. When I play music, I become free as a bird. Everyone has his/her own personal connection to music. As for me, music fills me with something wonderful that I can't even begin to explain.

music is important to me because it's always there. I can't really count on my friends being there for me, but when they aren't there, I can always sing. Whenever I take out my bass clarinet and play it, I feel great. I really love the feeling you get when you play a really emotional song in a group. When I can create something beautiful, that's when I realize how important music is to me.

music's important to me for three reasons

1. it gives me an outlet for my emotions.
2. band (or orchestra or whatever) is like a big family and that's great.
3. and it makes me feel like i can do something that a lot of the population can't do play in a band (or orchestra etc.)

Music is important to me because it's the great unifier.

You can be sitting with a person who doesn't know your langauge, a person who hates your country, hates your religion, hates your political stand point, however once both of you hear this wonderful composition both of you will be compelled to talk about its wonderfulness.

Music is also the only method of passing one's soul through the body of others. Whether you play a show with a huge attendance of nearly 10,000 or a local show 0f 20 people, you'll always captivate the souls of every person before you. You'll always have two people who don't know each other talking about "how !***** awesome" that was.

Music is important to me because it helps me forget about all the stress in everyday life.

WOW! What a thought-provoking question! A few years ago I would have said it meant nothing. But I was wrong. It just has to be everything. I play the trumpet, and I can't part from it, It's stress releiving, brain stimulating, and interesting way to imitate people you admire and just a cool hobby. It makes me wonder what I missed and what others see through their instuments. It opens a whole new world...

I don't know why I play... at first I thought it was because I love to try new things and there's always something new, or because I like being better than other people. But all I really know is that if you took away all my instruments I would rip your flesh and scream at the top of my lungs until you give them back, or fall into the depths of despair.... I've never thought about how much music meant to me until I thought of not having it. It's a gift.
