im in perth, (the other side of australia) nobody in perth likes rugby when we say football or footy we mean aussie rules, soccer is soccer and american football is american football

Yes, we do call American football "gridiron" sometimes, just not too often. The term is mostly used by analysts and commentators.

I've played an ultra whimpy version of rugby in gym class a few times but it was fun anyway.

actually my teacher called it Australian rules football aka rugby. Fairy ball is actually pretty accurate considering that a bunch of junior high girls were playing.
