Which instrument would you prefer-the bari sax or the bass clarinet?

Both are nice. I prefer the tone of a bass clarinet, it's just incredibly relaxing and melodious, but that instrument just has the (huge) inconvenient of not being able to play at high dynamics (at least not as loud as most other isntruments)...

I play both, and if you ask me, the bass clarinet isn't always too soft. I haven't been yelled at too often for playing too soft.

I prefer the bari sax, mostly because it's new to me, since I just started it this year. It's a nice change from the bass clarinet. It's got such an amazing sound in the low notes...

Gotta love the roaring bari-sax underneath a tight jazz sax section. Bass-clarinet seems so uninteresting. Bari-Sax is also more versitile. Good luck.

i'd disagree that bari is more versatile than bass clarinet.

plus, bass clarinet has twice the range. (ish)

and is rather easier to transport (spoken as someone who played both bass clarinet and bari in the pit orchestra for one show- getting both down to the theater every day was certainly fun)

not that i dislike bari or anything. its really fun. i just like bass clarinet better.

Yeah. The bari sax is rather painful just to move around a room. Bringing it home and back to school again... Ouch!

The bass clarinet, everyone's like "How do you carry that thing?" I look at them like they're crazy. "It's easy. Hold the handle and walk..."

I play sax, but bass clarinet is better than bari I think. Easier transport, bigger range, dark solid sound....bari is loud, boring, and HEAVY.

I think we're talking about the extreme low notes on the instruments. It's difficult to play notes in the lowest minor third or so of a saxophone softly (or for that matter with a pleasing sound) and difficult to play the lowest notes of a clarinet even moderately loudly (although these notes are very pleasant sounding).

I find low notes on the bass clarinet really easy to play... especially blasting them =P

Very fun to kill the oboes ears infront of me =D
