Strings? I guess we all have our own opinions, but why strings? I played harp for a couple of years but they're sooooo many string to tune! And I had calluses on all my fingers.

My sympathy is with your callused fingers. Still, I enjoy the sound of the harp, and I would like to know more about it in order for me to be able to write for it. I believe that some tunes in my mind would sound great on the harp.

Harp was fun to play, and it did sound beautiful. But, you defiantly have to be a dedicated practicer! (know it's not a word!)

Anyway... let's keep things going: Woodwinds or Brass?

BRASS!
They have so much to offer, loud/soft, beautiful/rough, epic/gentle, jazz/classical/rock.
I played clarinet for a while myself, and then shifted to french horn, and I'm also learning a bit of trumpet now too. I find the brass have so many more options, styles and flexibilities to offer. They add so much effect to any band/orchestra. Not to say that woodwind isn't essential, (a balance between both is important in any large ensemble) but I definitely prefer brass just in the enormous sound options. And they can be very beautiful - especially the french horn! (sorry, just had to add that )

Well personally, I like woodwinds, but brass is good too. I play the flute so I have to go with woodwind. Wooo! Go Woodwinds!!!!

Well in all rights each section does have their benefits. As a woodwind player myself.... Woodwind players do have a slight edge on the technical side of music. HOWEVER, The Brass section (coming also from marching drum corps) is a section that can create EXCITEMENT and well lets face it..... ALOT MORE SOUND!!!!

So to me they are equally important.

That was a very good post! I guess we all have to work together to make something sound good. But... the woodwinds are the ones who have to cover up all the brass's mistakes!

Who[sic.] better the Woodwinds or brass? Well since the brass are at least literate then I would have to go with brass. Since there are such things as brass bands and there is virtually no music for woodwind without brass then you would have to say that the major composers go with that as well.

Brass totally!!!!!! We cover up woodwind mistakes! The clarinets squeak like every 30 seconds and the flutes are so airy. But the french horns sound graceful and the trumpets sound regal. And whoever said only woodwinds are soft you haven't heard a decent horn player!

You're describing beginning woodwind players right?

In my experience, the "beginning" woodwind players only squeak every 3 minutes, then they get blind to their flaws and squeak more often.
