When i play Prelude no.1 from Bk1 by BACH in the left hand you play a note which is connected to another note which is the same. This note is connected by a slur. Do you hold the 1st note & keep it down througout the measure?

It isn`t a slur, it is a tie. You play the first note and hold it for the second note as well.

Sophie ur tone of voice sounds as if i am listening to a very serious patronising piano tutor. It could help to be a little polite & correct as- Well actually Siren a Slur is actually a tie. Are u sure Sophie? Here is an example of someone`s reply from another forum;

Your assumption is correct: the value of two notes is summed up, so in effect you continue to hold the same tone for as long as the second note lasts (giving an overall length of the tone to be the sum of both notes). The connecting slur between the two notes is called ligature, not to be mixed up with the legato slur!

I`m sorry, i was in a hurry and i was trying to help. I was taught it was a tie but it means the same thing . I am just going by what my teacher said. What country are you from?? Maybe we learnt different words for the same meaning because we are from different countries.
Sorry to be so rude, i was just trying to help

I apologise too Sophie for being abit 2 harsh with words. I only heard it was a slur from a Boosey&Hawkes read music from scratch & they said a slur. Included in my reply i showed a response from another forum. In time a few more replies were made & they 2 said it was a tie.I`m from the U.K. Anyway enough. Music is music.
Take care
Siren
