So what do you guys think about perfect pitch? Can it be developed? Is it worth it? Do any of you have it? what do you like about it, have you had it since you can remember or did you develop it?

Thanks

I heard somewhere that you can learn how to develop it. I`m good at hearing intervals, but whether they`re tuned to 440 or whatever, I never noticed or cared. I`ve got some friends with perfect pitch and it`s a constant pain for them, because they always hear people playing out of tune!

your right. i have a good ear, like you, and am good at intervals, but don`t have perfect pitch. People often confuse the 2. A good ear is really useful, and perfect pitch is nice, but not that useful in my experience. The only time i have ever wished i had it was in a song in a high school musical where i had to start acca pella on the right notes so i`d be on key when the band came in. What do YOU think?

I have perfect pitch. And I have to tell you that it is so much fun. I play the guitar and I am learning the piano right now. The thing about my perfect pitch that is probably different from many who have it is I did not have it 3 weeks ago. I just learned it. I am still developing it but I can account that it can be learned. I have had it all this time but did not pay and great attention to it. You all have it. It is useful to have perfect pitch. Songs, music on paper, and just thinking of what you are going to do makes all so much more sense.

Oh I forgot to mention.. Hearing intervals and hearing the distinct qualites of a pitch are a totally different expierence. I can hear intervals great too. I can do both. I just met someone who was has had perfect pitch awareness all her life. She is just blown away because she can not understand what it is like to not hear the qualities of a pitch. In fact she does not know what it means to not know what a C is or a A-flat.

I think that perfect pitch is excellent. I think it could be achieved and I know that I am one of those that would love to achieve perfect pitch. I know that I am working on achieving that perfect pitch whether if it is playing my instrument or if it is singing. I am always working on it.

I just recently started to develop perfect pitch, so I do believe it can be learned. I already had a very good ear at relative pitch and adding perfect pitch makes it even better. When people say that having perfect pitch is hard on them because they can always hear people off, that`s just BS and they`re trying to show off or something. EVERYONE can pretty much hear when someone is off and it is very discomforting, with perfect pitch you can tell if someone is right on or not but if they`re a little off it doesnt matter. And having perfect pitch is great because you can hear things in your head better, everything just starts to become much more clear so you can compose and improvise much better than you used to. If you don`t improvise much in a band or with other musicans, or you don`t compose large orchestrations and you pretty much just make up techno on your computer using Acid or whatever, then I guess you might not want to spend the extra effort gaining it, but it`s always good to have.

I have had perfect pitch for as long as i remember, I thought that everybody had it until my piano teacher noticed when i was about twelve years old. I can distinguish any note of any register on the piano etc. and can sing any pitch asked for. I find it very useful but I cannot play a piano which is out of tune. I have taught piano for many years now and I have a couple of pupils (one is only 8 years old) who have almost perfect pitch.

Lol-

I am a rare species- a male flute player. But, yeah, I have almost perfect pitch. I can play yankee-doodle, (staple for a fife, I mean, flute) but I have NEVER read the notes. I can listen to a song on TV then turn around and play it. That`s why I`m currantly going great guns with harmonica

And yes I have to admit to my attuned ears, the old joke "How do you make two flutes play in tune? Shoot one!" Is quite true. (Not to mention that half the flute section in my band is actually pics :O)

I have perfect pitch..but not every day! anyone who says they have it all the time is either lying or very very lucky..like all things musical you have off days, on my off days i still have relative pitch so provided i know what the root is im fine,on the good days I can write a whole song in my head whilst sat on the tube and write it out when I get home( all without picking up a guitar)as for learning it? well Im sure its possible but it would require maintainance, which if you have an ability naturaly is`nt required..that given, whats wrong with a pitch fork...?

I`d love to have perfect pitch because you could hear a tune and then just play it straight off, great for aural tests! But what if you have transposing instruments like clarinet or trumpet that would be very confusing?!?

When it comes to having perfect pitch, the easier the music is the better pitch you will have at that music. I play the cello, and since I can play just about every piece of music, I try to find the hardest pieces of music I can find to improve my playing usually level 6 music.
