I'm so angry, my stupid Dad is saying that I need to "think it through" before I start the violin (he says this because I already play clarinet bassoon and oboe. So the way he sees it, I am stretching myself too thin and am not going to get good at any of them. I reckon thats bs, im grade 6-7 Clarinet, grade 3 Bassoon and grade 3 Oboe.

My only option is really to drop Oboe to try and appease him. This might not even work, because I currently teach myself Oboe and therefore don't have to pay for lessons. However my Dad is convinced that I need to have a teacher in order to play the Violin, he says it's too fundamentally different from Woodwinds and other stuff but he doesn't really know much about musical instruments so he doesn't really what he's talking about. He really just doesn't want to pay for lessons!!!

I can understand where he is coming from, but I sat a music scholarship a while ago and I think that I will get it and if I do then music lessons are free, but even then he said I still need to 'think it through'

Anyway, if you've read this, thanks I'm just venting, I'm hoping to resolve this tomorrow.

Hello, I can understand your frustration too. My dad didn't want me to learn violin simultaneously with guitar. I'm currently grade 5-6 in guitar, and just started violin. What I can tell you, is that it's REALLY completely different; the bow itself is giving me a lot of problems in the 1st 3 weeks. And it's got no frets, so you'll need to really pull yourself to learn it all by yourself.
If you want to do it though, I totally encourage you, few people can understand the satisfaction we musicians get at playing...

I can see that it is tough for you, but it also must be tough for your dad. because that sort of thing cost alot. A good beginers violin alone will be close to three hundred dollars. And you will probalby want a better one to fit your musical skill. I suggest you talk again with you dad and explain to him all the points in your favore, BUT DONT GET ANGERY!!! this will only convince him that you are "streached too thin" and working to hard. In then end it is best to know that your father loves you and he knows what is best. and you cant say that i dont know what I'm talking about; I am taking fiddle, karate and art lessons, I am going to have yo quite one next year, because of the cost and the stress it puts on my mom.

But dont give up! I am sure you will work out a compromise!

I understand the frustration. However I would listen to your dad on this one. The differences between violins and woodwinds are way to big to overcome without some kind of help from either a teacher or some one who has been playing for a fiew years. I don't dout your musical skill, but if you really do want to play violin properly you will need some kind of teaching. and it's definetly a good idea to talk to your dad again. Just do not get angry and give reasons why you want to and why he should let you learn to play.

I know how you feel, well kinda. my parents are threating to take away my violin because of behaviour even though i have only been playing for six months and have already done my grade 4. you will need a teacher though - and it helps to have played a stringed instrument before, as with me and guitar. there is alot of effort needed but go hard - violin is so great.

I'm looking at it from the other side-I play AMEB 5th grade Violin, 4th grade Piano and I want to start bassoon, but the whole music departement and dad think ill be stretched too thin.

Violin is fun, just remeber to put rosin

Also, they can get quite expensive. I have apparently, according to this pro violinist from brisbane, grown out of my $1000 violin we just bought. great.
