I'm a sophmore auditioning for all-state orchestra this fall but I can't decide on which piece I should do. My high school orchestra teacher says I won't get in with anything lower than a difficulty level of 12/20. The highest 20/20 is Tchaikovsky's Concerto for Violin, but I'm not advanced enough. I'm more an medium-high intermediate student. Here's the pieces she suggested, but I don't know which one I should do. Does anyone have any suggestions on which one is better or more fit for auditions? Or does anyone know of any other songs that might fit in this category??? (She said no one gets in playing Vivaldi, so I canceled that out.)
In no order:
Pablo Sarasate Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs)- a bit challenging & quite fast but it's really pretty (difficulty 18/20)
Viotti Concerto no. 23- more in reach, not really inclined to play it though (difficulty 14/20)
Borowski Adoration- no comment. but it's really pretty (difficulty 14/20)
De Beriot-anything
Vieuxtemps Concerto no. 4- don't know wht it sounds like (difficulty 16/20)
Mendelssohn Concerto- I think quite a few people play this and I'm not really inclined (difficulty 19/20)
Chausson Poeme- I've heard it's really gorgeous (difficulty 17/20)
Khatchaturian Concerto- (difficulty 17/20)
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated since this is my first time trying out and I have no clue which piece to do. Other suggestions on pieces w/ difficulty levels that are similar are most welcome also. These are just the ones w/ difficulty levels printed on a sheet of paper w/ songs most played at auditions that I received.
