Hey

I was wondering if anyone could help me with introducing good and patient violin teachers for beginners. I enquired at Coronation Music School and their rates are 180/month for 45min lessons each week (4 times). Is this very expensive?

btw, is learning at music schools or from private teachers better? Thanks.

$180/mth for 4X45 min for beginners is pretty expensive. This rate is what my teacher charges for 4X1hr lesson for grade 6. Then again, it depns on the teacher. And also, if the place is swanky, it also increases the overheads.

yeah i thought so too but apparently, other music schools offer the same rate too. Is your teacher a private one? Are private tutors or music school instructors better? Could someone recommend me a good teacher/school where the rates are reasonable for a beginner? Thanks.

i prefer to learn in private, as i feel there's more personal coaching involved.

My son's teacher holds classes in his small scale music school in Toa Payoh. You are right abt many bigger music schools - Yamaha/cristofori types. You have no control over which teacher you get and the turnover of teachers is very high. Most are parttimers. I think a specific teacher is more impt than the name of the school. Referrals from other students are very impt.
I always pass by Mandeville at United Sq. It seems quite professional too. I checked out the rates. For different teachers, the rate go from 130+ to 200+ /4 lessons. You may want to check it out.

I heard that mandeville is very profit-driven. I've asked my friends and they think its ridiculous for grade 1 violin classes to be so expensive, but they are not sure what the rates are now since they completed grade 1 ages ago(and of course the fees were much cheaper then). But it seems really strange that the fees for grade 8 and grade 1 only differ by about $70 a month.

Yes, I saw on the rates sheet (I go to United Sq every week for my son's speech and drama). From grade 2 to 8 onwards, it is same rate for 1 hr lesson. I find it expensive too.

wow... your lessons are all quite expensive.. I live in the u.s.a. I am taking fiddling, and i alternate between 2 teachers, depending on time of year. One teacher is $20.00 for 1 hr, and the other is $16.00 for 45 min. Of course, the currency exchange probably works out or something...

Hi Ponngol,
I stay in Punggol too! My elder son is going 6 in a few days. He started in Feb this yr and is now playing Vivaldi's Concert in an minor, 3rd movement. My younger son is going 4 end of Dec and is playing Seitz's 2nd concerto (the 1st song in Suzuki book4).
Elder one practices abt 1 to 1hr15min daily, the younger one practices abt 45-1hr daily. Soemtimes before they go to preschool, I will let them do abt 10 min each of the song only.
They are both fast learners with very good memory. But parental involvement is vital. I sit in all their classes, copy notes. I write down a practice plan after the lesson and "direct" their practices according to it. BTW, the elder one does piano as well, so you can imagine the amount of time I spend on their music training daily...
Of course, there is the occasional crying and screaming, but when they see progress, they are motivated and this is the kind of intrinsic reward that I prefer.
