Hi, as the topic states, I am a new student starting the violin ( and no, I don't have a teacher handy at the moment, so "ask the teacher" is unfortunately not a valid answer here !)It may simply be a property of violin strings in general, but my D string, and especially G string, tend to whisper, rather than produce a smooth, warm tone, regardless of how much pressure is applied. The strings in question are a $15 set of Palatino Perlon synthetics, which I purchased to replace the cheap strings which came with the outfit. Unfortunately, as I received the violin as a gift, it is a "mystery instrument", but judging by the sensibilities of the giver, was likely about $170, lol.

I don't think it is a problem with the rosin, as I applied a new coat for a whole ten minutes (which resulted in a white cloud when I played the first note, lol), but maybe perhaps a difference in the strings, or some playing technique I am unaware of.

Do others have G strings which are more troublesome than the rest? Is this a normal condition, or should it be addressed?

The problem seems to be one of adherence- the higher strings adhere fine, but the lower ones, especially on fingered notes, have horrible adherence to the bow. I don't think it is lack of rosin, as I add heaps, but maybe it could be "old rosin"?

lol- figured it out on my own- it was tuned an OCTAVE too low!

It is a whole lot easier to play now, and actually sounds like what I felt a violin should! I thought I was just horrible.....

$15 sythetic strings still STINK and as for the violin... VERY cheap but as long as it plays. i would STRONGLY suggest newer better strings, it would make it sound ALOT better. and for the tuning, dont ever tune it like that again, the strings will break and possibly the instument if you let it stay for too long. also, getting a teacher will REALLY help!

$15 for a SET of strings? I cant even find a set of strings that cheap over here, and if I did they are likely to be VERY bad quality strings. Also, $170 is WAY cheap for a violin. It is probably a student violin. Most violins are a lot more expensive. Mine costs $3000 and it isnt even considered "professonal". Some musicians spend more money on their instruments than they do on their cars or even their house.

Since your strings were tuned an octave too low, there was no harm done to the violin, now if they were an octave high...

violinist92, u said what i said!! no need to prove urself when i allready said that, and uve only been playing for 2 years!! with that exp. u should NOT have a $3000 violin. and if that picture is UR violin than u got giped!!! many professional orchestras wont except a pink violin. (thats also why it is not considered a professional violin.)

P.S. ur vabrato cant
be excellent if uve only been playing
for 2 years. it takes on the average
8 YEARS to get it perfect.

also, an octave to low can be VERY bad for the instrument.

Oh, goodness, do you have a stick shoved up your ass or what?? Well you need to pull it out before somebody else does it for you.

I did not say what you said, I was talking about the brands of strings and how you can sometimes tell how valuable the violin is by how much it costs. If I want to discuss a topic I will damn well do it, regardless of what was posted before that. And who are you to tell me that I shouldnt have a $3000 violin?! I`ll have you know that I didnt go out to the music store and pick the most expensive instrument I could find. When I signed up for strings at my school 2 years ago they have a rental program that gets their instruments from a store out of state. When I got the violin, the price tag on the violin said $3000.

And no, it`s not my violin on that picture, I like that picture because it is very cute. On the chinrest it says "the music keeps me going". Do you really think I own a neon pink violin with words on the chinrest?

So is there anything else you would like to whine about, or are you done? Oh! I know! You could whine and complain about why there is a 92 behind the Violinist on my name. Yeah!

I`m pretty sure that the person posting the question didnt purposly tune the strings an octave too low. That would be quite stupid considering you can hardly hear the sound of the strings when they`re that loose. And she/he wouldnt be asking the question is she/he had purposely tuned the strings that low.
