Hi, I am now practicing my scales in the third position but i am having difficulty. When i try to play all the notes, my hand and wrist hurt. Is it normal for beginners to feel pain or does it mean that i am not doing it the right way?

I would appreciate if you could give me tips on this. Thanks.

Your hand and wrist should not be hurting, especially since you are only in third position and hardly any unusual bending of the wrist is required.

You have to find out what you are doing that is causing your pain because if you continue it you could eventually end up with tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome. Both are severe and painful enough to force you to stop playing the violin altogether, and that would be terrible.

Is your wrist straight? Sometimes having a bent wrist will cause pain in the hand and wrist. Make sure your hand and fingers are positioned right. I would also suggest going to visit a physical therapist and ask him what are the best stretches for the wrist and hand.

That is strange indeed. I love playing higher positions instead of first just because it is more comfortable! lol but just make sure you're still using the proper technique with your wrist and all, because I could see people trying different ways of holding it in higher positions and ending up in pain =P

Yeah it happens to me, but not so much painful anymore. Do you have like a picture how my hands should look like in the third position? I think whats causing the pain is my thumb becuase of the strong grip on the neck/fingerboard.

My my my, there should be no pain at all when playing any position. What you may be experiencing is something caused by incorrect posture and incorrect holding of the violin. If you are taking private lesson or being taught in a group setting, I would suggest that you take this up with your instructor. I have found that many violinist play in pain due to not playing in an ergonomic way. Every violinist has a different body structure and that calls for the violinist to adjust so that they are playing comfortably in every position. I hope this advice helps you out.

you should not be gripping the neck of the violin at all.the violin justs rest lightly in the left hand.get your teacher to show you.THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.there should be no pain at all when playing.

When I started, it hurt alot, but that was because I was tryng to reach it without moving my arm. whenever you do anything new, there will probably be some initial discomfort, but not pain.

I would try to make sure my thumb is always in the right position, and that it moves with the shift. That could cause pain too if the hand is stretching. It will also help you when playing harmonics from third position, or doing any other extension, as bringing the thumb along is very important for good pitch. So try to develop the habit now.

It is quite strange that it hurts your hand-especially because your only in 3rd position. You might want to check with your teacher if you are doing the technique right. Otherwise you'll just have to get used to it!!!
