if you are reading notes then, it will help to write notes under it like
thats a example of piano but just pretend its a violin notes ok?
so that would be d,e.f#,g,a,b,,c,d and so on but you can always (if your teacher aproved) write so notes to help you rememeber.
always make sure your dads violin is the perfect size for you or else your going to get tire quickly.
the way you sit can efect you so always foot on the ground and wrist straight !!!
playing out of tune can be very bad so ask your teacher to tune your violin
you can always ask me for more info!!

I'm not a violin player, but I am very interested in playing.
One thing about reading music: I CAUTION YOU WHEN I COMES TO WRITING THE NOTE NAMES UNDER THE NOTES!
Work on learning the rythms and names of notes.
I am the percussion section leader at my school and the section has gotten themselves into a tight, perplexed problem becuase they were told that it is okay to write the notes in when they play melody percussion.
The section has been playing for four years and they can't read music.
I started taking piano lessons when I was 5 and I NEVER wrote the notes in... and now I'm way better off then the percussion section.
Just a bit of warning.

Oh sorry... yes it is OKAY to mark a note or two that you just keep missing to help your brain remeber it. I was just trying to make the point that if you constatly write the note names in, you may struggle later.

Again sorry to jump on your case.
I noticed that you play flute (i think thats what you profile said...) so hopefully you already now how to read music.
But I still do believe that my adivce would help a beginner.

Yeah, I play the flute and just started with the piano too. I also play the harmonica.
I know hwo to read music, but your advice is real good advice. Something similar happens to me at school, my music proffesor writes the names of the notes under them on the scores...my classmates have problems reading music, so he is taking them out of the scores for 2008.
Thanks a lot!

Ps. I forgot, I also play teh guitar :)

I would suggest learning how to play standing. its very easy to pick up bad habits sitting down. posture is very important as it will improve the sound of your playing and the tone of the violin, and it is much easier to notice if your posture is bad standing. it is very easy to learn to play sitting! you just sit down and get comfy! Go to a music teacher so that they can get your posture right, it's easier to learn it first and not have to improve it later (trust me, after having to go through two teachers i had to spend a WHOLE year correcting mine, it still needs improving!) Also learn how to bow properly, you want your hold correct and for the bow to be travelling perpendicular to the bridge at all times. a good bow hold means that later when you come to doing staccato and lifts it will be easier to control the bow.
the most important thing about learning the violin though is to have fun. Once you know your fingering find music that is fun and easy. this will keep you practicing.
Perfect practice makes perfect - remember this, it makes the violin easier to play in the long run!
Enjoy yourself and good luck!
