in regards to what blackhellebore89 said about the third finger being the same as the next open string...

if you're playing in first position then this statement is incorrect. it would be your fourth finger which is the next open string. not the third.

on the G string in first position, the third finger (as if playing a G major scale) would not be D, it would actually C. take it half a step higher and you have C#, next is your fourth finger and that is the equivalent to your open D string.

and so fourth for the next strings.

fourth on D would be equivalent to your open A string, fourth on A would be equivalent to open E.

I'm not sure if you were trying to imply by seeing if your octaves were in tune with each other. which i wouldn't advice a new player to attempt tuning this way.

if you ARE. then your FIRST finger on your G string, is an A note. but it's an octave lower than what your open A string would be.

in regards to the person above trying to tune to a piano. i had a lot of difficulty doing this when i was younger because my parent's had a very old piano which, in itself, hardly ever was properly in tune. or constantly all flat.

i found this to be a real set back as i started to train to hear a B# to be an A. which of course is disastrous when you try to tune later with another instrument or with other violinists.

if you ARE going to tune to a piano (or another instrument) make sure it's also in tune. and on the other hand. I've had situations where I've had to tune my violin sharp or flat to match a piano accompaniment.

another way to test this? with your chromatic tuner check to see if your piano is in tune, this is how we figured out my parent's piano was constantly flat

'yeah, I'm always really afraid when I try tuning my instrument. I read somewhere here that violin strings are in great tension so they're more likely to snap than those on other string instruments.

and yep, I'm getting myself a tuner asap.'

If it happens it happens, no big deal really.. just make sure that if you do snap the G to not go around telling people that you snapped your G string.. I got a lot of stick for that

oh my... i remember when i was younger, i took a basic guitar class at my high school. and my teacher was a bit odd. he used to make a point of saying things like "pluck the g-string" and making it sound perverted lol.
