get a classical, you can get various kinds of mutes for your violin which will damp the sound. also if you get good and you wish to upgrade then you can electrify your old violin with piezo transducer bridges (expensive) or just a cheap pick up. to be honest a good electric will cost as much as a good classic, so you may as well get the classic as they are more versatile.

I would definitely want to start out on a traditional acoustic violin. Get to know the instrument and play with a good sound, then you can look forward to buying a 2nd electric violin.
When my daughter played, I was hoping she would get serious enough that I could justify buying her one of those electric models, though. They are pretty cool.
