Hi... I was just wondering if anyone can give a general idea of what key most songs are written in??-- I mean what are the general most-used keys? I know that sounds silly, but I've been asked to play in a group for church this Sunday... so I really am a bit stressed because I don't know if I will be able to play well, considering the practice session is tomorrow, wed., and I don't really know very many keys (aren't there 12 major and 12 minor for violin?). I can also do backing vocals if there isn't a violin part... or if I can't play the key it's in. But I really would like to know because I'm so nervous... aren't a lot (generally) of songs written in the regular A, C, D, G, etc. keys? I just don't want to get stuck with a K flat sustained minor song or something really difficult. I'm sorry I'm very ignorant when it comes to keys...

Your best bet is to practice major scales Ab, Db, A, E, and B.

You won't find a whole lot of minor keys in the church setting. And since you don't know a lot about them (yet) you should be able to get by without too much trouble.

I played with my church's worship team for a while (and plan on getting back into it.. took a break for a while though) and most of the keys were like.. C, G, D.. easy ones. Nothing hard at all.

For the songs that had sheet music (hymns mostly) I played the melody and ones just had the chord name written out, I just played the note like that.. it was easy! You could also add some of your own stuff within that key to make it more interesting, but I hardly ever did cause I'm used to having sheet music..

But I wouldn't be too worried

Thank you all so much! It went nice today, I actually didn't mess up (that much) and that's exactly what I did (meaning playing the chord names just as they were and impovising)! The Lord gave me peace in any case... It's funny because usually I would almost fall off the stage from shaking so hard
