In violin music, how does a person no when to change positions to play a note, since the same note can be played in different locations?
for example, If the music says to play a G on the 6th space of the staff, right above the 5th line (F), how do I no if I should play the G on the D string, 3rd position, 4th finger, or play the G on the E string, 1st position and 2nd finger.
my email address is "rebelrob1@yahoo.com"
thank you
Rob

it would depend what came after it i guess. if you had to play something in 3rd or fourth position straight after playing that g then it might be easier to be in a higher position. if you were to move after that note there is nothing stopping you playing the g in a higher postion if that made it eaier to play the rest. if you can work your way up to the higher position than it might be easier to play. hope that helps.

thanks for your reply - so could we say the rule is - moving to another position is a good idea if you play more than one note in that position.
