I have a good ear and can tell notes but cannot tune my violin. Everytime when I move the top pegs the string snaps. Can anyone help.

Well depending on how long you have been studying violin, I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND NOT TO TUNE YOUR VIOLIN! Your ear isn't quite developed yet uf you're breaking a string every time you tune. A teacher will help!

Use an electronic tuner. The strings not going to allow you to far before it snaps. A firm grip and use small clicks of the peg. Its just repetition. Years ago when I first started working on violins I would break plenty of strings. It never happens these days. Just practice and small clicks.

But an electronic tuner and a pitch pipe and use them both together to tune your violin. Make sure your fine tuning pegs are unscrewed all the way out before you make large adjustments with the pegs. Get close using the pegs and the pitch pipe, then use the electronic tuner to fine tune using the pegs down by the bridge.

Don't worry I used to do that all the time and decided after many broken strings that it was better to let my teacher do it!


However if you do have a good ear then there should be no problem. All you sneed to do is push the peg in as well as turning it at the same time. Obviously dont do it quickly and dont tune to high either otherwise the string will snap (too much tension)



As for tuning if you pluck the string and tune downwards, bring it back up and you should be able to hear the correct note and when its in tune.
