It`s bound to be a risk. Try getting out from the front desk of a viola section to go to the toilet in the rehearsal interval: instruments everywhere! You have to choose: through the seconds, the firsts, through the woodwind or through the celli double basses and heavy brass. It always terrifies me and I wonder when i`m going to knock an instrument off someone`s chair.

The truth is, lots of students below college level don`t give a damn about your stuff. They`ll plow their way through the stands and send your bow flying over there somewhere.

I`m all hands on that. I agree with u terribly. And it really pi**ed me off when some idiot from the back row needs to leave bcaz of something. Then u can hear the "ouch!" "Oh, I`m sorry," " look out" " pardon me" and "excuse me" all the way from the back row to the very front. And it`s really irritating and distracting. Esp. when yr bows get knock off repeatedly. Though it doesn`t happen too often, but when it happens...it really pi**ed u off. U know what`s kinds wierd...actually getting my bow knock off all the time makes me look like a bigger idiot than the person who has caused all this inconvenience, but the thing is we`re so used to hanging our bows on the stand. Nothing seems to change it...funny thing.

One of my friends carries it to school, and always hits at least one object with his violin (in it`s case). He was 10 years old and his violin stayed in mint condition. When it became time to sell it, he actuallly made a profit!

These tips might help you, but not all.

First, get a good teacher. There are lots of teachers out there with bad advice, and they could easily mess up the fundamentals of violin playing. To fully recover from one of these incidents could take years.

Try to get an hours worth or more of private lessons weekly, instead of the standard 30 minutes. You`d be surprised at how much more you could improve by this.

Practice a lot, and properly at that. I try to pack in at least 3 hours of practice a day in my busy schedule.

geez one thing i don`t understand... if you are so afraid why do you even touch them?
*sigh*
if u r so afraid of damaging them just put them ALWAYS in a hard case whenever u dont play them - they`ll be safe inside. i don`t even have a music class in my school so i have to go to my teachers home after regular school. that means carrying <my preciousssssss> with me for 5h straight. but i keep them in sight and everything is just fine.

Maybe an older student could teach you for a lower rate, but it depends on how good they are at teaching and playing as to how much you would learn. It is very important to learn from a real person, not a book or video, because they can give you feedback and show you exactly how to do things you are struggling with.

Sorry I don`t have any other ideas for cheap lessons right now, but I hope that you find something!
