I played the violin when I was a boy, back in the early 60's. My violin has been in closets, under beds, in garages, and storage for all these years. I took it to a Luthier and had it adjusted. He replaced the bridge, set the sound post, replaced one peg, and put new strings on it. I got a new fiber glass bow.

I have started playing again and the dominant strings sound good except for the A string. The rest of the strings sound rich and clear, having been play for a few weeks now. I am not happy with the sound of the A string. The A string is not rich and clear. It is in tune but sounds as if one was playing a note not on an open string and their finger was not pressed all the way down.

I am considering taking the violin back and asking to check it out again. I am also considering just getting another A string. This brings me to my question: what kind of string do I replace it with. Any opinions given would be appreciated.

I have put a new set of strings on and had a dead string. I changed that string and all was good again. The only thing is about your violin, you have not played it in so long you don`t know for sure if it is the string or some other problem.

Try changing the string first.
