Hello,
I am an adult student who has been learning to play the violin since February this year. It took me a couple of months to find a teacher who could fit me in due to the hours I work. At my first lesson the teacher informed me she only teaches basic violin as she is mainly a base guitar and piano teacher but seeing as I had no previous experience in music, and didn't know one note from the next, I was expecting to start at the bottom anyway. My lessons are 30 min a week and after 4/ 5 months my teacher told me I needed a new teacher as she couldn't really teach me anymore. However both myself and my teacher have had no luck finding a new teacher as I would prefer one that is local.

Since then I have been learning pieces of music to play as duets with my teacher playing the piano. About a month ago I bought a couple of books that show how to move from first position to third and to fifth. Due to work and decorating and doing home improvements I have only just managed to start the exercises in one of the books. It's not easy lol.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation and if so what is the best way to proceed.

Cheers,
sharkstooth.

I would strongly suggest that you find another teacher. Depending on availability in your town, you may want to research teachers in a nearby town. You may have to sacrifice and drive some distance for a good teacher. I suugest finding a Suzuki teacher. I believe this method is great for beginners. To start, visit the Suzuki Assocation of the Americas website:

http://suzukiassociation.org

Click on "find a Suzuki teacher near you". You'll see the rest of the directions on the site.

Also, to learn a bit about the method you can read the following books:

I Can Play My Violin Just as Well as Jeremy Can!:The Suzuki Way/Margareth Keith
and
Nurtured by Love/Shinichi Suzuki

I hope this helps!

Hi,

I made a website for people who would like to learn violin from schratch. I think this will help you. I also think you better find a teacher who has his or her focus on the violin.

Check this out: http://violinfromscratch.com
