unless it`s a 14" viola compared to a 14 1/8" violin...

Seriously, viola. Violas come in varying adult body sizes between 14" and 17"+, violins are generally very close to 14" body length. That`s the body not counting the neck length.

Well if you really want to complicate things, you can get violas down to 11 inches

Most violins and violas I`ve seen are pretty much the same size. I remember a viola that my strings teacher had was about twice the size of a regular viola, but it was specially made. It was just wider and thicker by a few inches than the full size viola.

The viola sounds beautiful.

Does a 14" violin and viola sound almost the same with only the difference in thickness and width?

There is a difference between violins and 14 inch violas. It`s not always obvious to the eye though. But they do sound like violas. Well, Gligas do anyway.

I remember a guy viola player that was 6`4" tall and 250pounds. His viola was obviosly bigger than the usual viola, but still he looked like a giant compared to the others in that class I was in (mostly 5`7"ish tall girls).
