Hi guys I'm not a violinist just somebody looking for a little advice. I have a son who's asked for a new violin for Christmas and I've been scowering the web for something decent. He enjoys rebuilding and repairing aswell as playing so I've got a pretty broad choice.

Just looking for advice on one ive found on eBay? Is it any good? Worth the money? Or will I be scowled out on Xmas morning for purchasing bonfire wood? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

My main string instrument is the viola but I can also play the violin quite well. Depending on how old your son is and how big he is is a factor in getting the right instrument.
If he is only small, and depending on your price range, it's not absoulutely neccessary to buy an expensive or really good quality violin because he will probably grow out of it in a year or so. If he isn't going to grow very much more, then it is more important to invest in a good quality instrument that will be naturally more expensive.
I don't see anything wrong with that specific instrument- however there are other brands that are still good quality that can be bought for slightly less than $500.

A lot of really nice violins can be found at thrift stores. I recently found one that was for bidding at goodwill, the violin was won by my friend for 120$ and after being fixed up a little it was just fine. And the violin I use was found on Craigslist. It was a extremely nice one, and was 400$

Any violin is a good starting violin as long as it stays in tune and sparks an interest. Since he is new to the violin, it's ok to use eBay, but generally, you'll want to go into an actual violin shop to see what you're going to be paying for.

All excellent advice above. Keep in mind that if you are going to pay for something, nothing beats actually hearing/playing it first, so you don't have any unwanted ebay surprises.

Ask around your community, kids grow so quickly there are bound to be some second hand cheapies that are decent to play out there. Also, look up violin teachers in your area, they will be able to give you the contact of a student who is lookin to sell.
