I have a 10 year old son who is interested in playing the violin. I also have a very old violin that has been in the family for years but needs repair. The violin is labeled inside Jacobus Stainer in Absam, prope Oeniponium 1646.
Is this worth repairing or should I just buy him a new violin?

I personally think it would probably be worth repairing as an instrument that old will probably have a rich sound that a new instrument may lack. My Stainer is over 200 years old and has a mellow tone, while I feel that new instruments have a tighter sound. However, when you take it for repair, be sure to ask the technician`s opinion. There may be other defects that would render the instrument lacking, or that might cost too much to be worth the cost of repair. Good luck!

Certainly it`s worth asking. You can expect the cost of set up to be anything up to £250 but it could be a lot less.

Hi my name is silvia
i know i have a copy of Jocobus Stainer violins but, i think that mine was made by Jacob Stainer. The label says:
Jacobus Stainer Ablam Prope Oenipontum 1705 or 06 not sure.
Is my violin worth anything?

It will be a copy. They always are. The chances of your having a violin by a renowned maker and not knowing about it are so low as to be not worth considering. Perhaps about as high as your chances of winning the national lottery (or winning it 4 weeks in a row, in the case of a strad!).

Violin copys can be worth a lot, you just never know how much. Strad copys could be worth around $1,000-5,000, I saw a strad copy on the Antique road show get appraised for about that much.

Hello,
My name is Luke and I have a Jacobus Stainer violin. Its probably a copy b/c what are the chances of a WV boy to have something like that. The label says:
Jacobus Stainer in Absam
prope Oenipontum, 1666
Neuner u. Hornsteiner in Mittenwald

Its got a solid spruce top and birdseye maple neck, back, and sides

I know Stainer lived during the 1600s and made German violins. My family emigrated over to america in the late 1600s from Germany. THis may be just a coincidence.

Made in Germany

All the spelling my not be right as the label is worn. I would like to find out who made this copy and the age of it. Any suggestions will help.

I should have described the tuning pegs on the violin. They are gears that are attached to the head and the pegs are straight back. I have never seen this kind of tuners on a violin. I am wondering if they are original to the violin.

Like guitar pegs you mean? i`ve seen them. i guess they make tuning easier at the expense of increasing the weight.
