I just came across the website of the Smithsonian Institute, looking for info about the Jacobus Stainer violins. On the website is the tekst of the origional label printed.
An easy check for you to see if you have a real one.

I have a violin that says Jacob Stainer Violins of Germany no. 1725 on the inside. Could anyone give me any information on this and tell me what the no.1725 means? Is it the year it was made? Maybe the 1725th one of its type made? I`ve done some research on Jacob Stainer but I can`t find any information on this particular violin.
Thank you

I have a violin with a label inside that reads, "Jacobus Stainer, in Abfam. prope Oenipontum, 1676." It also has Stainer written on the back near the neck. I would like to know if this violin is an original or if it is a copy. How can I tell? I would also like to know how much this violin might be worth. This violin has been in my family for at least 200 years.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer me.

Suzanne
