I played quite a lot previously for our church before I swapped. I could improvise and play with a band quite well, I do not understand why i could do it. I am not good at composing, understanding chords quickly, nor can I remember well anything. But I just sing an alternate melody along with the soloist. I try not to play the same note as the soloist. Maybe it is just because I simply cannot remember how to sing the right notes, so I keep on singing the wrong notes (wrong melody) on the violin, but it sounds usually quite good.
Did you pray before you play? It is the Holy Spirit doing things, you know?
