Krista, usually you would find where the notes are then put scotch tape to mark it. On the open "E" string, the other notes "F, G and A" with the fingerings 1 2 and 3, you would put a piece of tape where the 1 , 2 and 3 are. When you mark those notes, the other three strings will be marked also for those fingerings. I`m 20 :-) and actually I just started playing the violin almost a year ago, but my main instrument I play is the cello. I got a little head start on playing the violin since I already knew how to play the cello.

I just started playing violin myself, and I`m 46. I`m sure it`s gonna take a lot of time and devotion. I wish I had started at your age. I would playing well now. Time goes by so fast and before you know it, you`re 46 and never learned to play an instrument. As much as I love music, it kills me not to be able to play along. Now I have that long road of learning ahead of me, instead of behind me. Hope I can stay with it. Wish me luck.

Get a private teacher if you`re having any trouble with playing the violin. After that, if you know what you are doing and practice, then you`ll be a pro in no time like in one or two a years. Ha, long road ahead of you :-), yes because you are only a young 46. It`s funny, why do people think middle age is around 40, when in fact people live to 120 (the people that actually exercise) :-). 120/2= 60 , so middle age is actually about 60. Have you ever heard of Jack Lalane, he`s 86 years old and healthy as a 30 year old knowing how to do those one-armed pullups and stuff. He could easily learn how to play the violin with no trouble.

Dude I began playing Violin at 19 and my major in college is Music Education. So starting at 14 is more then enough to time dude. If you want to play then you won`t be able to relax till you at least rent a Violin and see if you like it. Go find a teacher and maybe pick up the Suzuki Violin books (starting with book one of course). If you have the desire to play go for dude don`t let anyone shoot down your dreams!
Take care man and practice practice practice!

I had wanted to play the violin since the age of six, and finally started playing when I was fourteen. I am sixteen now. It was the best decision I have ever made. I love the violin and hope to continue playing for the rest of my life. I found a private teacher in my area when I first started, and private lessons have helped me improve a lot because I have my teacher`s full attention. If you are looking for a violin, check to see if any of your relatives have an old one, they produce a much better sound than the newer ones. I found my great-grandfather`s and had it restored, it played much better than my cheaper, first one. The best part about starting the violin when you`re older is that you wont outgrow the violin you start with. Good Luck!

If you have an ability as ear sensitivity and if your hands are available to play as equality length of fingers and if have strong intent you can play. I started in same age of you than now I am a professional.. But you must work very hard.
For the begining I suggest some methodes
Hohmann violin school 5 books first one is a nice starting unit.

I am also 14 and have just started the violin about three months ago. I have previous experience with reading sheet music since I played the sax. in fifth grade, but in my opinion, the violin is much harder to start off than any other instrument. In my case (which is practicing for 2 hours every day), picking up the violin wasn`t that hard, and I have recently started playing on book two. If you are willing to put in the extra effort then I`d say go for it. Just don`t get involved unless you are sure you will make an effort! Good Luck.

Yes, but you won`t see a reply for a while, because this isn`t a live chat room, it`s whenever people feel like writing something down.

Hey Jake
I myself started pretty early (4 years) and now ill be turning 17 this year. i reckon playing an instrument seriously takes alot of pride and time AND patience. If u just want to play for fun then thats perfectly fine but if u want to go serious, and your parents are thinking that its nto a good idea, tell them that its not only for your benefit in your present life but also in the future. when i reached your age i was in a doubtful mood of continuing violin, but 2 things held me back, my future and my love for it. You see if anything happens in the future ( bad high school marks or college marks) u would still have violin to fall back on. I really hope you`d continue with a good decision jake because its great to see some kids still wanting to do something old
