I`m not sure if I`m overtightening. The only other point of reference I have with bows is the double bass bow so when I tightened the violin bow I was thinking the bow tension should be about the same as the double bass bow. With the violin bow tightened it felt like the hair could still easily touch the wood part of the bow when I press on it lightly (relative to the double bass bow).. I`m not sure if that`s normal.

Incidently my double bass teacher recommended playing the double bass with the bow tilted toward the top of the bass.. ie. towards the scroll. This is my first experience with string instruments so I didn`t question him, thinking it`s standard practice.
