Hi:

I`ve been playing on the violin now and I`ve always heard on the internet stuff about the grades. First grade, grade 8 blah blah blah..
What is that. Can anyone explain me about it???

Here in aus. we have AMEB grades (australian music examination board) When doing a test for a grade( meaning to pass and excel a grade certificate) You would have to have learnt different techniques, information and all that for the examiner. Usually preparing for an exam you`d have to choose 3 pieces (A,B,C) and practice out of an ameb grade book, which has riffs and tunes involving what u have learnt (eg 3rd position)...basically a grade is just a whole lot of things uve learnt, depending on which grade ull be taking on

If u r in the UK, then there are exams grade 1-8, which all mean the same in the end, but there are different exam boards (LCM, ABRSM, Guildhall etc.) Associated Board are definately the most reputable. There are practical exams on your instrument, and then exams in theory of music (written paper grade 1-8) and in practical musicianship (practical exam in things like sight reading, aural tests etc.). You don`t have to take all the exams, the only condition is that you must take Grade 5 theory or practical musicianship befor you can take grad 6,7 and 8 on your instrument. Confusing, i know. By the way, Grade 5 is equivelent to a GCSE, Grade 7 to an AS Level and Grade 8 to an A Level.

Hope this all helps
