If you ask me, violin tabs are useless -- learn to read music. However, the bottom line is the G string, and the top line is the E string (and of course the middle ones are the D and A strings). The number you see is the finger number you use. If you see, say, a "5," that would mean second finger in third postion. I`m guessing on this, because you`d need to have half steps.

The reason the tabs are useless is because we don`t have frets. Get yourself a book on music reading and do that.

to optimize your playing, you should learn how to read standard music notation. for faster results, tablature is the way to go.

my question becomes, where can i find tabs online for indie bands with violins, say Arcade Fire or the Raincoats? I can read sheet music for them, just guessing it`s not out there.

you and i are in the same place. what i did was tune my violin like a guitar & use guitar tab. transcribing guitar tab to violin isn`t rocket science either, if you want to use standard tuning. most of the time someone will have tabbed the violin portion out for the guitar

I don`t know why you would say violin tabs are useless. I had no backgroud in music and didn`t know how to read music. Every course I got tried to teach me how to read music. Lets see, I`m trying to learn the violin and read music at the same time. Doesn`t work. I spent 1 week with that and couldn`t play anything. I spent an hour with tabs and was playing a full song (Bilem Cabbage Down) with the shuffle bow method. If thats a waist of time I would like to waist a lot more. The problem is finding Violin music in tabs.

respomding to the person that didn`t know about the 1/2 steps: it should say at the top near the title what sharps/flats there are in the peice. TABS are just a way to show music over the internet, so you should NOT (repeat NOT) learn violin from tabs. Guitar or Bass, fine, but NOT violin. TABS and Violin aren`t made for one another!

i will teaching a few children tab, but im not sure how ill do it, but in order for the cildren to learn where there steps are i used electrical tape on the finger board. if you put 1 piece at the first step and 1 at the 2nd step and 1 on the 2nd and a 1/2 step it helps the kids find their notes. If you use black tape they hardley see it and need to feel and hear for that clear note. you still need to know your sharps in order to simplify your reading. as for free music it is ok if you want bach. I translate My music but cannot read it, however i play by ear and dont need it.

i Just wanted to say to the guys from the band. fiddle music is different and is generally passed two ways. By notation and orally, wat im used to. as i said i dont read so i would just find some one in your area that plays and get together. to make your own tab you need to know how to read somewhat
