New member here. I've got a music degree (theory and composition), I play tuba and build lap dulcimers. I want to buy, and play, the recorder. Since I read both treble and bass clef well, I have thought the tenor or grand bass would be the best for me. I sing bass in my church choir and play tuba in bands. I like the low notes and would like to, eventually, have a grand bass.

In the meantime, as I'm saving up for a grand bass, I thought I'd buy a tenor. Hopefully, my assumption is correct that the fingering on the tenor is the same as the grand bass.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

If you cover all holes in a recorder and blow, you will get:
- a C in soprano (descant) and tenor recorders;
- an F in alto and bass recorders.

so it is CFCFCFCFCF… all the way down.

If your grand bass is in C, then it would be the same fingering. If it's not, I would recommend a alto recorder, which is in F. The recorder has 2 keys, F and C. The music unfortunately does not transpose for us between keys. Tenor recorders are in C. I have a bass recorder and it is in F, but a grand bass is bigger. My best advice is to check the key of your grand bass. If it's in F, then it would not be the same fingering as a tenor. If it is in F, I would recommend to buy the size down from the tenor which is the alto recorder. Hope that helps!

Note: There actually isn't a grand bass recorder, but there is a great bass recorder which is quite low. Good news! The great bass recorder is in C like the tenor, which means the same fingering!
