I'm going to give the 15 most influential rock songs, in my opinion of course. These are not in influential order, just in chronological order.
"Heartbreak Hotel" - Elvis Presley... influenced all the lazy stoned white kids, like John Lennon, of the 50s to pick up a guitar and play.
"Maybellene" - Chuck Berry... he is the man. Read his autobiography, he is America at it's finest.
"Can't Buy Me Love" - The Beatles... made by the influences of Elvis Presley, handed down to every single person in the 1960s. Single-handedly produced bands like the Rolling Stones, the Who, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, and Cheap Trick.
"Like A Rolling Stone" - Bob Dylan... incorporated so many different sounds into his music, made it possible for anyone to make a new sound.
"Purple Haze" - Jimi Hendrix... the one most well known, but you cannot say one of his songs is the "best." It's just not possible, his songs as he described them are "fusing earth, the bluesy funk and rhythm, with the space, the high pitched psychedelic sounds." He is the best guitarist to ever live, and the most influential.
"I'm Waiting for the Man" - The Velvet Underground... influenced every single alt. rock band of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. That's how good they were. During the 1960s the Beatles were Jesus Christ if he was a band. The Velvet Underground was the anti-christ. Singing about drug abuse, prostitution, sadism and masochism, and sexual deviancy, the Velvet Underground made alternative rock what it is.
"Whole Lotta Love" - Led Zeppelin... best hard rock act of all time.
"Paranoid" - Black Sabbath... along with Led Zeppelin made metal... well, it made metal metal. It was a toss up between Paranoid and Ironman, but I like this one better.
"Search and Destroy" - Iggy Pop and the Stooges... influenced so many bands it's not even funny. Sex Pistols, Ramones, Jello Biafra, Kurt Cobain, Sonic Youth, Gun's 'n' Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, you name 'em, they influenced.
"Blitzkrieg Bop" - The Ramones, influenced the Sex Pistols. I could say more, but that seems like enough. It's like being the father of Jimi Hendrix. Everyone should just bow down and say, "THANK YOU!"
"Anarchy in the U.K." - Sex Pistols... loud and fast, anarchy, snot and !***!, sweat and blood, grease and grime, that's what the Sex Pistols were all about. Throw in three chords and you have the Sex Pistols. They didn't think outside of the box, they used the box as a cumrag, spit on it, and then smashed it up against the wall. Fuck the box, we'll destroy it and maybe make a new one. Or not.
"Orange Crush" - R.E.M.... amazing song, influenced a lot of alternative rock and mainstream rock.
"Here Comes Your Man" - the Pixies, influenced all the grunge era bands also, hardly mentioned on the corporate side, but legends to the underground.
"Kool Thing" - Sonic Youth... revolutionized how to tune an instrument. Influenced some great bands including Nirvana.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana... a culmination of all my prior songs. Just an amazing band and song. Took all that was in the 80s, and made it null and void. No more Michael Jackson, no more Whitney Houston, rock had taken back the charts. The grunge/Seattle sound had rotted and festered in a slimy pit of isolation, and what came out of that pit was amazing. Nirvana broke open an alternative rock scene that has thrived since the early 90s, making it possible for bands like Seether, Green Day, and the Offspring to have corporate success.
