I`m fine with lyric writing its the tunes I can`t do. My friends and I started a band a while back with myself as lead singer... yeah it kinda works its jsut we tend to be covering things and we`ll never go anywhere if we do. I write lyrics but its the music i have difficulty with. I think if I could get a melody the rhythm and everything else would come. Any suggestions?

Im` quite the opposite. I can come up with tunes, melodies, and rythms all day, I just can`t come up with any lyrics. I write the tunes off of the way I feel at the moment, but when I try and add lyrics, I get a block.

Um... there are hundreds of rules in music. It`s fun to break them. I have serious trouble writing lyrics; I`ll go for month`s not able to write anything and then I`ll have these blinding moments of clarity. Usually after I`ve been drinking.
I think the thing about writing depressing music, it kinda depends on what you are brought up on; people listening to Marilyn Manson have a different perspective on life to those say who listened to Mozart or Mendelssohn as a kid(My god, those poor souls.) It`s about what you know. Myself, I`m an Aerosmith lass; Steve Tyler and Joe Perry are gods, seriously. LOL. If you`re desperate to write cheery, good-feelin stuff, go out and expand your horizons, listen to some new stuff, do stuff that makes you feel good. You never know, you might just get that inspiration you need. (How teen mag did that sound?) Or, try this, if your music is based exclusively on feelings, pick a random object or a situation, think about it, jot down what comes to mind and incorperate the things it makes you feel into your music. (This always makes me feel like a prat so I get some good ideas for carefree stuff out of it; makes you feel for a few moments there`s nothing important in life to worry about.)
Or it could be a technical thing; experiment with instrumentation, new chords, rythmic devices n stuff. You shouldn`t have to bust a gut over trying to write something happy; it sort o defeats the object of the exercise if you`re not happy when you write something. Anyway, sorry for wafflin`, have fun kiddies.

there are a few techniques to song writing.
- make up instrument parts, what to do during the song
- make a theme for the song like example spider man or something
-then have everyone in your band write down what they think of when they hear that word or just have them right lyrics
- pick the best one
___ works good
or there is another way you can do this the jack black way
- sit down with your band and get ticked off
- then just play what you think will sound good and the lyrics should come

Depressing is not all there is, but it is easier to write. And who there Flee, your song you posted is pretty good, but it doesn`t flow to me, guess depending on how you sing it it could though. I signed your guess (your band sites) book with a big long to-do on wrting positive songs, hope you like it.

I think your song is pretty cool.
I really liked the part you wrote,
"scrub a slate clean/with tainted water". Wicked!

Those are not bad lyrics. Nevermind what others think. Just keep doing what you are and it will get better and better.
