drummers -- the most technically proficient doesn`t necesarily mean the best. I think it`s a toss-up. Peart is good for sure, the most technically brilliant; he is know for drumming very fast and making the drums part of the melody -- really part of the song, not just keeping the beat. Bonham was known for hitting the drums incredibly hard, like in When the Levee Breaks. Remember those first beats? Both are great and distinctive.

Eddie Van Halen is overrated. He may be able to play fast, but his songs are juvenile and he has no soul. Compare him to Hendrix, who had so much feeling in his playing, and Jimmy Page, who had so much creativity and orchestral arrangement ability.

Also, one of the best died young -- Duane Allman. He was only 24 when he died, and his playing was so mature. Layla, etc.
