Does anyone know the name of the music that is used in the final scene of Master & Commander the piece Russel Crowe Starts to play on a small Ukelele type instrument and bettany joins in on a violin. It is continued for a while as the end titles come up.I first heard this years ago as incidental music in a film called Cruisin with Al Pacino and have always wanted to know the name of it.

Paul, You echo my question precisely. I`ve been doing some searching with no results other than that it`s not the last track listed on the music score (Full Circle). It seems that here too it is treated as incidental music. The reason for my query is that the duet music sounds very much as if it comes from Misa Criolla, the great Argentinian folkloric mass. I do not have a copy of that work at hand for reference. In any case, it does seem distinctly Andean in quality, and as they were on their way to Valparaiso, Chile (I lived in neighboring town of Vina del Mar for two years), this music would certainly be appropriate. If I find more information about the piece, I will post it here. Feel free to do the same, or email me.

First of all, the "ukelele-type" instrument Russell Crowe is playing is his violin, and Paul Bettany joins in on cello. Secondly, the piece they play is by Luigi Boccherini, "La Musica Notturna Delle Strade di Madrid no. 6, op. 30. It is track number fourteen on the Master and Commander soundtrack.

Quite of bit of sheet music can be found at Shar Music`s online store (sharmusic.com). While the name of the piece on the soundtrack is listed as La Musica Notturna Delle Strade Di Madrid, I believe it is also known as the String Quintet in C Major, G. 349 (orchestrated with two violins, viola, two cellos).
Oddly enough, the piece was commissioned by Napoleon`s brother, the imperial ambassador to Spain.

Thanks to you knowledgable people for helping me to find the exact piece of music. One additional piece of information is the movement: Quintettino.

No need to find an arrangement for the "La Musica Notturna" if you want to play it for violin and cello... in the original quartet the two violins are unison (and the VLN II has the extra cadence), and the viola and cello II do dispensable quarter note pizzacatos... it is a great violin/cello duet.
Watch out on prices... they range from $12 to over 50, but cheap is probably good enough (was for me).

Thank you to everyone for their help in finding the title for this great piece of music. I must ask, has anyone seen the rather bad film called Cruisin with Al Pacino and if they have was that the music used throughout the film as incidental?

meAGAIN I still don`t know where to find it . I`m hopeless on computers, infact, I practicly need a step by step guide to surfing the web, and I hate looking stuff up in the library, so I find out all the stuff I need when I read books, but I don`t think I`ll ever find the music I want by reading any book, and worst of all, I can`t find any of of the books (sorry, forgot Authors name) the movie was based on in the library, or any bookshops near me! Oh well, continue searching tommorrow, until then will content myself whith re-reading "his dark Materials" by Philip Paullman. I love him! Genius!

I`ve been trying to find it too. The precise movement played at the end of the movie by the Captain and the Doctor is Passacalle From Quintettino - La Musica Notturna Delle Strade di Madrid No. 6 Op. 30 (Boccherini)
Running Time 2:50. You can hear it at http://www.iclassics.com/iclassics/album.jsp?selectionId=323
along with the other movements in La Musica Notturna Delle Strade di Madrid No. 6 Op. 30. I hope someone can find the sheet music or a midi.
