if you want to get a better sound on piccolo, you should consider looking into wooden piccolos. While gold enhances the sound on flute, metal piccolos (no matter what kind) are generally very shrill. Even though this works for marching band, in a more symphonic setting it really sucks. wooden piccolos create a warmer, darker sound that the metal marching band variety.
ps- if you do buy a wood picc, dont use it for marching band; changes in temperature and humidity make the wood crack.

Wait. A gold lip plate by itself does not affect the sound of a flute. If it has a gold riser then some believe it can darken the sound. However, the reason you sound better with the new headjoint is because it is probably a better made headjoint. As for the gold lip on a piccolo don`t waste the money on it for marching and if it is for concert get wood because it would be better for concert band.
