Sorry to have to tell you this, but "well working" saxophones are not nearly that cheap. If you have $150, multiply that by about ten if you want a decent brand new instrument, and by five if you want a decent second-hand horn. That`s the lower end of the price spectrum, too. Alto saxophones can be upwards of $5000. I`m sorry if that disappoints you, but that`s just how it is. Some instruments are cheaper than others, however. You can get a decent trombone for $150. The saxophone is an expensive instrument. Unless you have at least $1k to fork over, you might want to consider something else.

You know what, I lied. Selmer makes a decent inexpensive horn for beginner students called the "Prelude." It costs about $600 US, so you`ll have to save up a bit more. That`s about the lowest they come. Here`s a link for more information:

Oh, and I forgot to mention one thing. I would definitely not recommend buying a sax from a pawn shop, or anything like that. Chances are, the horn will be in horrible condition, and will be simply unplayable. If you are thinking of pursuing a career in music, I would not suggest buying a sax from a pawn shop.
