I found a plastic bass clarinet that has a range down to low c. it is 1,500$ at wood wind brasswind. My parents said i could get it but it`s plastic and i would like to continue on bass clarinet in college and it is a reasonable price, but it is plastic and my parents do not want to by me another bass clarinet before i go to college. Should I wait and buy a wood bass clarinet or should i buy this one now.

Plastic bass` are actually quite good in most respects-they`ll rarely (if ever) crack. I prefer wood bass clarinets myself; I find the sound is a lot darker. However, I love plastic bass` cause` it`s just easier to blow. $1500 is a very reasonable price-extended bass` to C are a must! If you have that money to blow, how about looking on ebay-they`ve got some pretty good wood bass`, at a fraction of that price. Whatever makes you happy (the fact is you just wont get a good wood bass clarinet, to low C for $1500.)

Oh, and by the way, this is a fascinating article: http://www.ridenourclarinetproducts.com/articles/grenadillamyth.htm
It`s basically about how wood is not always the best material. Hope this helps.
