I recently took possession of a Armstrong 104 flute SN: 38 20975. Can someone give me a brief discrition of what I have here based on the serial number? What is meant by open or close hole? My grand child is showing interest in music and maybe learning the flute maybe good place to start.
thanks

Well, If your grandson is interested in playing flute, all band directors recommend one of these brands:

Armstrong (104)
Gemeinhardt (2SP)- Best Flute I`ve seen so far!
Yamaha (221)
Artley
Selmer
Bundy
Sonare
Jupiter
Pearl

DO NOT GET THESE BRANDS!! CAUTION!
"Sky"
No name brand flutes
"Selman"
"Kersting"
"BandNow"
"First Act"
"Venus"
"Victory"
"Lindo"
ANY FLUTE ON EBAY
ANYTHING NEW Under 200 is JUNK!

Please DO NOT think of buy any other brand, they are either cheap, BREAKING EASILY and need costly Repairs.
BE AWARE OF EBAY FLUTES PLEASE!

Open Hole is for more advanced students. I recommend closed hole for a beginning student in band.

You Should also get a flute that is a C foot. It is lighter than a B foot flute. A B foot flute has an extra key on it, to make it go low. It IS heavier though. They are also a bit pricey too.

You should go with Split E Mechanism and Offset G. Inline G and Non Split E Mechanism Flutes MAY be difficult to play for some beginning students.

Remember... The more expensive, the better quality! (Most of the time!)

Hope this helps!!
