Hi.Im just starting to play the oboe for school this year and i know lots of people make their own reeds. Why is that? And i would like to learn how to make reeds so if someone could give me easy step by step instructions on how to make an oboe reed and the materials needed it would be greatly appreciated.

Yo Marty,
Oboists make their reeds so they can personalize them to their liking. Like if you like a dark reed you can scrape underneath the tip of the reed to get it there etc. I can`t really explain how to make reeds. There are many steps to making reeds and can`t just be explained in a few sentences. Might I suggest you get a teacher who can make them and show you how to do it. Hope this helps!

Hi Marty and Chris,
I`m a beginning Oboeist as well who is trying to make reeds as I learn the oboe. I have found lots of info on making and adjusting reeds by using a search engine. Try MSN or Google search engine with "Making Oboe Reeds" or "Adjusting Oboe Reeds". That should bring up some hits.
