I`m here in Mexico and have just bought a violin for $130 from a guy who makes guitars, violins, and other string instruments. It looks very nice, although I couldn`t tell by the sound if it really is good or not as I do not yet play the violin. So my question is this: Does anyone know how the quality might be with a Mexican violin?

Well, I own a music store and can tell you that Mexican Fender Strats and classical guitars are excellent!!! Mexican violins are not really heard of, although Mexican people play them with classical guitars. European violins, to me, are the best! It doesn`t matter what kind....as long as it says `made in Germany` your fine!!
